Three Young Artist winners from the 19th Annual Germantown Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition will perform with the orchestra in
Also, the GSO will perform Symphony No. 88 in G major – Franz Joseph Haydn and Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) Howard Hanson.
- Flute Concerto in D major, 1st Movement – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart featuring Marissa Liu on flute
- Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, 3rd Movement – Max Bruch highlighting Frederick Huang on violin
- Symphonie Espagnole, 1st Movement – Édouard Lalo showcasing Catherine McLean on violin
Also, the GSO will perform Symphony No. 88 in G major – Franz Joseph Haydn and Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) Howard Hanson.
Catherine McLean, a junior at St. George's Independent School, plays in the Memphis Youth Symphony as well as the GPAC Youth Symphony. She has been studying violin with Pak Chung Cheng for 6 years. She began her violin study at the age of 3 with Mary Ann Mears and studied with her for 8 years. Catherine had the opportunity to study at Suzuki Summer Institutes for several years in Beaver Creek, Colorado, Dallas, Texas, New Orleans, Louisiana and Memphis, Tennessee.
Catherine has been selected to perform in WTSBOA All West orchestra for 5 years, All State High School orchestra for 2 years and NAFME All National Honors Symphony in 2018 in Orlando, Florida. In 2018, Catherine attended summer music camps at Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and Philadelphia International Music Festival in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This past summer, Catherine attended the Interlochen Advanced String Quartet Program in Traverse City, Michigan and was awarded a full scholarship. |
Frederick Huang began private lessons on the violin in Florida in 2009, where he lived until 2014. On his move to Germantown, Frederick took up tutelage under Mrs. Joy Wiener. He has performed in solo and concerto competitions, winning the Orlando Music Club
Awards, and a month later winning the Florida Federation of Music Club (FFMC) Junior Convention in his class. As a 9th grade student at Memphis University School, Frederick is an active member of the Memphis Youth Symphony. |
Marissa Liu, a ninth grader at Collierville High School, is studying flute with Mrs. Myung Kim, and is currently a member of the Memphis Youth Symphony. She won 1st place at TMTA (Tennessee Music Teachers Association) flute concerto competition and 2nd place of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) flute competition in 2018. In addition, she has been selected to All West Junior Blue Band for three consecutive years. Other than flute, she’s also an accomplished pianist and performed across the nation, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D. C, and etc. Her performance and news have appeared on TV and newspapers, such as, WREG Channel 3, WMC-TV Channel 5, Fox 13, and The Commercial Appeal.
