Germantown Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert
The Germantown Symphony Orchestra (GSO) winter concert will feature Michelle Pellay-Walker, Assistant Principal violist with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. Together, Ms. Pellay-Walker and the GSO will perform the challenging, butterscotch tones of the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Franz Anton Hoffmeister. Interestingly, Ms. Pellay-Walker's husband is a composer. There are a few elements of the Hoffmeister piece she wanted to alter, so her husband added several bars of music to the original piece. That amended version is the one you will hear at the concert.
The concert will open with Gioachino Rossini’s brilliant La Gazza Ladra overture, La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is taken from a French melodrama, about young servant girl Ninetta, who is condemned to death for the theft of a silver spoon. Guest conductor Jonathan Schallert will lead the orchestra in Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite for strings showcasing eighteenth-century dance forms, and the concert will conclude with a selection of Anton Dvorak’s colorful and evocative Slavonic Dances. Dr. Schallert is the Orchestra Director at Rhodes College and is the Artistic and Music Director, and conducts at GPAC Youth Symphony Program.
