Anthony Gilbert, Conductor
Anthony Gilbert enjoys a varied musical career as a performer, teacher, and arts administrator. Born in 1979 in Memphis, Tennessee, Anthony Gilbert received his first violin lessons from his grandfather, Noel Gilbert. Among his earliest musical memories are rehearsals and concerts of the Germantown Symphony. Moving to Chicago in 2001, he played viola with The Civic Orchestra of Chicago and was a member of the faculty at Northeastern Illinois University and the Merit School of Music. From 2007 to 2011, he served as Executive Director of the Eroica Ensemble in Memphis.
As a chamber musician, Anthony performs regularly with the PRIZM Ensemble and teaches at the PRIZM International Summer Music Festival. Anthony can be heard on I Can't Stop and Everything is OK, two albums from legendary Memphis soul-singer, Al Green, as well as Roots and Crowns, a 2006 record from Chicago-based band, Califone. As an improviser, he has played fiddle with Big Barton, a classic-country band in Memphis. Anthony studied music at Oberlin College (B.A., 2001) and Chicago College of Performing Arts (M.M., 2003). He currently lives in Lyon, France.
