2023 GSO Concerto Competition
Eric Xie on piano
A recent Houston High School graduate, Eric headed off to college this fall. In addition to playing piano, which he began at age 5, Eric also plays trumpet, which he started studying at age 10. He is now studying piano and trumpet at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Eric has placed in various local piano competitions numerous times, such as the International University of Tennessee at Knoxville piano competition in 2023. Additionally, he was a part of a semi-finalist ensemble in the National Trumpet competition, as well as a member of theAll-Nationals orchestra. Aside from music, Eric loves to cook and to paint. |
Kim Huang on violin
Getting an early start with her violin, Kim began at age 4. She's now under the musical instruction of Diane Cohen, from whom Kim has been taking lessons for the past five years. Now a high school junior, she was accepted into the 2023 Tennessee Governor's school for the arts for violin. In addition to being one of the GSO Concerto Competition winners in 2023, Kimberley placed 1st in the Intermediate Beethoven Club Young Artists Competition. Kim studied with Long Long Kang for 3 years. Both he and Diane Cohen are in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. |
Dannie Dong on marimba
A high school senior in the 2023-24 academic year, Dannie plays percussion and piano in his school's band and has accompanied fellow students during their performances. Outside the school environment, Dannie plays in the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra, and has won regional, statewide and national recognition on percussion. Playing percussion since he was 11 years old, Dannie has been studying under Mr. Colby Snider, and now studies under Mr. Edward Murray. His journey with the piano began much earlier, when Dannie's parents accidentally found out that he had perfect pitch and soon after, he began enjoying his journey as a piano player. In addition to playing percussion and his math skills, Dannie enjoys Sudoku and crossword puzzles, playing tennis and chess, and improving Wikipedia articles. |
Marian Jamora on violin
As a senior, Marian has been playing violin for 11 years, the last six under the tutelage of Julie Johnson. Since last season, she has been concert master of the Memphis Youth Symphony. Marian has participated in All-State and All-West competitions for three and seven years, respectively. Continuing her musical development in the summers, Marian has attended Sewanee Summer Music Festival or Brevard's Music Center the past three summers. |
