American composers have enriched the symphonic repertoire with their unique voices and innovative ideas. We are delighted to invite you to experience an enchanting selection of works from this tradition, featuring compositions by Ellington, Price, and Gershwin. Each piece reflects the diverse musical landscape of America, showcasing a range of styles and influences. As varied as the styles and influences may be, there is also a great deal that connects these composers. Some were fellow students or taught others at conservatories; some were recent immigrants while others wrote their compositions while living abroad. All well represent this patchwork of a country we call America.
For Lukas Foss’s charming “Three American Pieces,” the GSO is excited to bring back to our stage violinist Linnaea Brophy, the winner of our 2002 Young Artist concerto competition winner. Ms. Brophy, originally from Memphis, graduated with her DMA from Stonybrook University in 2020 and is currently playing in the Rockefeller String Quartet, a string quartet affiliated with the Arkansas Symphony.
As we celebrate 250 years of American music, come and immerse yourself in the sounds of our nation's creative spirit.
