2025 GSO Concerto Competition
Hanna Yu
Hanna Yu on flute
While Hanna began her musical studies playing piano for three years, when her piano teacher retired, Hanna turned her attention to the flute. Hanna has taken flute instruction from Myung E. Kim for the past five years. In Ms. Kim's recommendation to the Germantown Symphony Orchestra, she wrote of Hanna that she, "possesses a beautiful tone, refined technique, and expressive musicality that brings depth and emotion to her performances." And the GSO's panel of competition judges concurred. As the sole winner of this year's competition, Hanna's performance of Ibert's Flute Concert, mvt. 1, Allegro was a standout.
In addition to the GSO's Concerto Competition, Hanna also holds the following accomplishments: First place in the International Grande Music Competition, winner of the 2025 GPAC Youth Symphony Program, second place winner in the 2025 Beethoven Club YoungArts Competition, 1st Chair in the All-West TN Band in 2024 and 2025, principal flute player in the Collierville High School Wind Ensemble.
Outside of her flute and academics, at school Hanna is involved in track and field, and tennis. She also draws for a hobby.
