2020-2021 GSO Concerto Competition

​Mark Addison, piano

Mark Danial Addison, of Eads, has studied piano ten years, the last three with Lisa Ramirez.  Mark performed George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for the 2020 GSO Concerto Competition.  

Mark is a homeschooled junior under the umbrella of Faith Heritage Christian Academy.  Mark has also played the French horn seven years and is a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church Sanctuary Orchestra since 2017.  He has been selected for seating in the WTSBOA All-West TN bands for the last four years. 

Mark is a member of the Memphis-area Home Education Association (MHEA) High School Swim and MHEA Water Polo teams, lettering in water polo since the 7th grade earning numerous conference and state awards including All-State 1st team. He lettered in swimming since the 9th grade and earned 2020 Honorable Member Best of Preps.

Mark plans on continuing his musical interests in college while playing collegiate water polo.

Sophia Cheng, flute

Sophia Cheng is a rising junior at Houston High School (HHS) and a 2020-21 Drum Major of the HHS Band. She is currently a student of Myung Kim of Collierville.  A member of the Germantown Youth Symphony Orchestra four years and the Memphis Youth Symphony Orchestra two years, Sophia won both Orchestras’ 2020 Concerto Competitions.  Sophia was a Runner-up in the 2019 and Winner in 2018 Beethoven Young Artists Competition in her respective age divisions.

The past three years Sophia’s ensemble achievements have paralleled her solo endeavors,consistently being named 1st or 2nd chair in the West TN Band and Orchestra Association (WTBOA) All West Senior and Junior Blue Bands. At the national level, Sophia was selected to perform in the Junior Orchestra in the 2017 Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall and again in 2019 as a member of the Senior Band.

When she is not playing an instrument, Sophia is active in academic honorary and civic organizations including Model UN, International Club, DECA, Key Club and Honors Academy.  She also swims with the Collierville Swim Team.

​Matthew Kim, flute
​
Matthew Kim of Cordova, is a rising junior at White Station High School. He began his flute study with Myung Kim of Collierville at age nine.  In addition to numerous 1st and 2nd competition awards and 1st chair band and orchestra 1st chair placements, in the past two years Matthew placed 1st in both state and national competitions of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and TMTA and went on to win the 1st place award in the Senior Woodwinds division of the MTNA State Competition as a freshman in 2019.

In addition to being selected as a 2020 GSO Concerto Competition winner with his performance of the first movement of Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute & Orchestra, Matthew also captured 2nd place in the 2020 Curb Concerto Competition in Nashville, TN and the Lois Pickard Concerto Competition in Birmingham, AL.

Matthew has held the Principal Todd Skitch Chair of the Memphis Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSP) for three years and was selected as one of the MYSP concerto winners the in 2018.  Matthew was selected as an Alternate for the National Youth Orchestra 2 last year.  Matthew took the lead in organizing a Flute Choir of students from the studio of Mrs. Myung Kim and serves as the Section Leader.  Matthew represented White Station High School in the WTSBOA All West Junior Blue Band and Christian Brothers HS Honor Band in 2017 and the All West Senior 9-10 Blue Band in 2019.
